Superior was once a small mining town built in a mountainous setting. Started in 1900 by George Lobb with the name of Hastings, Superior had made it's humble beginnings. Mines were frequent around the area, one of them being a silver mine named Lake Superior. This was the mine that helped the area economy to grow and thus the name of the town was eventually changed to Superior. The major economic sectors include mining, trade, and service. Agriculture and Ranching are also significant in surrounding areas. The scenic attractions are plentiful, including the Apache Trail, rugged mountains, desert vista, and four lakes that manage to give residents and visitors a look at Arizona's true beauty. Nearby attractions include the Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum, with more than ten thousand desert plants. Superior also has three historic districts and the Superior Historical Society opened the home of Bob Jones as a museum.
