Located in the San Pedro River Valley, surrounded by the Galiuro Mountains to the west and the Santa Catalina Mountains to the south, San Manuel is fairly new, modern mining town in Southern Arizona. In 1944, the Magma Copper Company bought all of the existing mining claims in the area that is now San Manuel. The project that began as an exploration produced mines, mills, refinerys, and the present community.

Attractions for San Manuel include Biosphere 2, which not only is world famous, it is just outside of town. A three acre model of the earth's ecosystem used for teaching and research. Other activities include The Oracle State Park offering nature programs and a wildlife refuge. The Arizona Trail is available for hiking and moutain biking, and the Pinal Pioneer Highway has roadside information on the beautiful wildlife of the area providing beautiful scenic drives.
