Founded in 1866, Florence played an important role in Arizona's rich history as its roots go back to the early days of silver mining, ranching, and cotton production. Florence was founded by a Colonel who was an Indian Scouting Agent. He staked claim on Florence, which was named for a relative named, Florence. Florence is the fifth oldest incorporated town in Arizona.

More than one person has called Florence a "Tombstone without the OK Corral." The truth is, though, Florence had it's own celebrated gun fight, the "Duel at the Tunnel Saloon." This epic event took place in 1888 between ex-sheriff Pete Gabriel and his ex-deputy Joe Phy.

At least a dozen major films were shot in Florence, most notably Murphy's Romance and John Wayne's Quiet Man. Florence offers a wealth of cultural and heritage experiences, boasting two museums - including McFarland State Park, which houses the archives of the late Ernest W. McFarland, the "Father of the GI Bill" and Pinal County Historical Society Museum, a showcase of historical artifacts from the region.

Florence has one of the state's most authentic historic districts and the surrounding countryside is replete with scenic areas and
recreational opportunities - the Gila River Riparian area, abundant wildlife, and pristine deserts. The area has several cultural, and historically (as well as prehistorically) important areas surrounding the city. These naturally preserved regions have withstood the test of time.
