The residential community of El Mirage has its roots in farming,
having been settled by migrant workers in the early 1930s. This city
incorporated in 1951, and it is not unusual to find families living
in the homes their parents built decades ago. Until recently, the
city maintained its small-town atmosphere. But it is now one of the
West Valley's residential hot spots and 7,500 homes are expected to
be built in a dozen subdivisions in the next decade.
The city is estimated to reach more than 20,000 residents in the
next decade. El Mirage is drawing growing families and first-time
home buyers with its low priced properties and beautiful scenery.
The Lake Pleasant Regional Park, located to the north offers
boating,
fishing, swimming, water skiing, camping, and picnicking for the
outdoor lovers. Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum is a replica
of an 1880s Arizona Village with volunteers and demonstrations. Many
of the included buildings were originally in historic Arizona towns.
Just southwest of El Mirage is Luke Air Force Base, home of the
56th Fighter Wing and the largest jet-training base in the world.
