DemographicsGila County is the home of the legendary Graham-Tewksbury feud, which started in the 1870's and lasting 15 years ,claiming dozens of lives and igniting tempers between cattle and sheep ranchers for years to come. Some of the natural attractions in Gila County include the Salt River Canyon, Tonto National Monument, Coolidge Dam, and Roosevelt Dam and Lake. Gila County, with its county seat in Globe, encompasses a 4,752 square mile area, with a population of approximately 53,015 (U.S. Census 2002). See more demographic information. History Copper continues to be a major force in the area. The Globe Mining District, which was originally part of the San Carlos Indian Reservation, was later added to the county area.

Portions of Maricopa and Pinal Counties were taken to create Gila County in 1881. Later part of Yavapai County was added. The area is known for its great mineral wealth. In the late 1800's, "silver fever" brought many new settlers. Once the silver was depleted, copper mining began an upsurge to keep the area economy stable.
