Ferreting out furniture finds

Sunday, July 18th, 2004

Savvy shoppers can save a bundle buying less-than-perfect furnishings known as “seconds.”

Seconds are pieces that didn’t pass muster at a factory because they’re missing a button or have a small tear or scratch. Seconds are just as stylish as their more-expensive counterparts, but are priced to sell quickly.

If brand-new furniture is important, deals can be found on quality furniture at stores that market to the thrifty shopper.

Weekly ads in newspapers and on television can help consumers find the best deals, said Michael Jedlowski, owner of five Ashley Furniture Home Stores in the Valley.

However, know that thrift stores, furniture liquidators and used-furniture shops are not created equal. Location and demand can alter prices and merchandise selection.

And if you take time to consider a purchase, you may find that while you were thinking, another buyer snapped the piece up. If this happens, keep on hunting and shopping for the deal you’re looking for.
